Abstrakt: The article reports on the response of striped bass phagocytes to different species of Vibrio for which the virulence for striped bass had been previously determined. The vibrio cultures used in these studies have been grouped on the basis of cultural and biochemical characteristics as well as DNA homology studies. Logarithmically growing cultures were washed three times with phosphate-buffered saline and standard curves relating optical density of washed cultures to colony-forming units per ml were used to adjust bacterial concentrations. The actual numbers of viable bacteria were determined by plating just prior to use in the assay, and all bacterial concentrations reported here were calculated from direct plate counts of adjusted suspensions.
