Abstrakt: This article presents a study related to atypical infection of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, with Yersinia ruckeri. A serious disease of farmed rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, known as redmouth was first recognized in the U.S. in the 1950s, the term being used to describe a septicaemic condition characterized by the presence of red, inflammatory areas round the mouth, throat or operculum. A retrospective examination of stock bacterial cultures has indicated that Y. ruckeri was almost certainly responsible for a number of the early outbreaks of redmouth disease in the U.S.A. and may also have been the cause of epizootics among rainbow trout in Australia at about the same time.
