The 'chain of varieties' model as proposed by Koch and Oesterreicher has become one of the most relevant contributions to the field of German Variational Linguistics in the past few decades. In this paper, I will revisit and discuss several aspects of this model, namely the theoretical heterogeneity of diasystematic varieties, the concept of markedness used in the model, and the place which the standard variety occupies within the schema. I will conclude by offering a revised version of the model according to the theoretical implications of my proposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
