In this study, I examine the ideological and aesthetic aspects of the only play written by one of the most important writers of the 1930s, Elias Venezis. "Block C" was written after the Liberation and before the imminent Greek Civil War (1946-1949). In his play, Venezis strives to depict a patriotic and harmonious co-existence of his fellow citizens in times of conflict while also representing the harsh aspects of the German Occupation. The study showcases the combination of realistic and symbolistic elements used by Venezis and looks into the stage direction by Pelos Katselis, as well as the reception by the critics. As I argue in my article the play reflects both the personal inclination of Venezis for the power of imagination that undercuts harsh reality as well as his distance from the leftist artists that strived for Socialist Realism.
