Abstrakt: Whether it is the miracle of growth, kaizen, keiretsu, industrial policy, trade conflicts, the »bubble economy«, or deflation, for decades the Japanese economy has repeatedly offered exciting new research questions and reasons to rethink economics and revise textbooks in the subject. In this article, this statement will be illustrated by current topics: demographic development and its effects on savings and investment, the extremely high level of government debt that is also associated with this, and the futile attempt to be free from a deflationary environment with the help of extremely expansive monetary policy.
