Abstrakt: The article discusses a newly discovered mid-thirteenth-century manuscript fragment (Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, Fragm. lat. 341) of a cartulary produced by the cathedral chapter of Naumburg (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Diplomatic and palaeographic analysis of the fragment, which consists exclusively of privileges granted by German kings, shows that this cartulary emerged from a larger legal and political campaign conducted by the Naumburg chapter to maintain their right to elect the bishop of Naumburg - a right that had been contested by the old episcopal see at Zeitz. The article argues that Fragm. lat. 341 should therefore be considered in connection to the Naumburg west choir and Naumburger Meister's famous portrait statues of the twelve cathedral founders found there (now a UNESCO World Heritage site). Since Walter Schlesinger's research, it has been standard to identify these sculptures as a political and symbolic statement of the supremacy that the Naumburg chapter claimed for itself.
