Abstrakt: Parental divorce has traditionally been associated with negative psychological outcomes for offspring. Although effective parental cooperation and communication are believed to be protective buffers, additional research is needed to determine their association with offspring's psychological wellness. Among 244 college students, results indicated that offspring of divorce reported lower levels of parental cooperation and communication during childhood. Regardless of family structure, effective parental communication was associated with higher levels of flourishing, quality of life, and self-esteem, while high parental cooperation was associated with higher mental/physical health, productivity, and self-esteem. Interestingly, among divorced parents with ineffective communication, offspring reported greater quality of life suggesting that divorce may have benefitted offspring at least in this respect. Such findings inform a strength-based model for planning family interventions focusing on fostering positive relationships between divorced parents. This study also examined offspring outcomes within the context of psychological wellness rather than observable psychopathology, as traditionally done. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
