The PROSPER exercise programme improved upper limb function at one year after breast cancer surgery and was cost effective compared with usual NHS care", the authors concluded. A structured exercise programme appears to be cost effective after non-constructive breast cancer surgery, according to findings of the UK Prevention of Shoulder Problems Trial (PROSPER) published in the I BMJ. i The randomised, controlled PROSPER study, which was conducted at 17 National Health Service (NHS) cancer centres in the UK, evaluated the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of a structured physiotherapy-led exercise programme plus usual care (information leaflets) compared with usual care alone in 392 women undergoing breast cancer surgery who were at high risk of upper limb disability.
