The article presents information on the 7th Bath International Congress on Osteoporosis, held during April 9-13, 2000, which was sponsored, in part, by the National Osteoporosis Society. Professor Pierre Delmas and Claude Bernard from Lyon focused on biochemical markers to evaluate patients, and discussed serum bone alkaline phosphatase, total osteocalcin, the N extension peptide of type 1 collagen, urinary excretion of pyridinoline crosslinks, N- and C-related telopeptides and others. A common theme at the conference was the recent concern expressed in the lay media regarding the potential negative effect of hormone replacement therapy on cardiovascular disease. |
