Abstrakt: Composite filaments based on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) consisting of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) were prepared by melt intercalation using a single screw extruder. The effect of CNC loading levels (0-4 wt%) on the tensile properties and water absorption behavior was investigated in this work. Results indicated that the composite filaments exhibited rougher surfaces and non-uniform diameters than neat ABS filaments. The tensile strength of the filaments increased slightly by the incorporation of CNC till 2 wt%, with the optimal CNC content, was obtained at 2 wt% CNC with an increase of 9 %. The tensile modulus of the filaments increased significantly by 54% with the presence of 1 wt% CNC but then decreased drastically at 2 and 4 wt% CNC. The introduction of CNC into the neat ABS increased the water absorption and the highest absorbed water content was shown at 4 wt% CNC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
