On this assumption, Kubota and Levine discount arguments from putative island violations that favor analyses that depend on sensitivity to nonlocal features of syntactic structure. Remarkably, Kubota and Levine offer an account of Merchant's celebrated preposition-stranding generalization for sluicing.
