Abstrakt: Its value for cytokine receptor structural biology is a bit questionable because we now have structures for most of the cytokine receptor complexes that we have determined experimentally. TCRs are not cytokines, but they are important in thinking about how immune cytokines work, because most immune cytokines are doing something to T cells. By using the structural principle and targeting that second receptor binding site, we have been able to bring down the signal strength of the cytokines and create cytokines that are much more tissue specific than the natural cytokines. The first steps include determining the structures of cytokines and their receptors, understanding the chemistry of the bonding interactions that occur between cytokines and their receptors, and identifying the overall molecular architectures of the receptor complexes.
