The article focuses on individuals' marital and intimate relationship experiences in later life. A larger proportion of older adults in the future are expected to be single or formerly married than today. Currently, widowed men outnumber the divorced by more than two to one in old age. The social context of widowhood also shapes different experiences for men and women. Because there are more widows than widowers, integration into the social world may be more difficult for widowers. For adults entering late adulthood in the first decades of the 21st century, divorce will have a more salient role in their lives than it has for current elderly. Singlehood may be easier to adjust to for men than for women because society places fewer social prohibitions on single men. Relationship experiences and options for older adults will be increasingly diverse in the future. The aged population in the U.S. will become considerably more heterogeneous in terms of racial and ethnic makeup. The 21st century will present a wider variety of relationship situations for older adults as a result of sociohistorical changes in recent decades. |
