Leishmaniasis is an important group of vector-borne diseases that caused by genus of Leishmania and affect both humans and animals. In this study it has been attempted to review the factors that involved in pathogenesis of Leishmania, immune responses against Leishmania, and the vaccines used in treatment of Leishmania infection. Here we discussed about Leishmania surface molecules-parasite factors (lipophosphoglycan, glycoprotein 63, protein disulfide isomerase, promastigote secretory gel, arginase) in pathogenesis, attachment and entry of parasites to host cells, and host immunity (Neutrophil, macrophages, T and B cells, etc) against Leishmania parasites. The treatment against leishmaniasis are limited with the use of pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, etc. But because of the toxicity and high cost of these drugs, the development of effective vaccines is very desirable and efficient. Here we reviewed the new findings about first (Leishvaccine), second (Leishmune, Canileish, and Leish-tech) and third-generation vaccines against leishmaniasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
