Abstrakt: 235 lactating cows from nine different farms of Pune and Satara districts of Maharashtra were screened with California Mastitis Test (CMT) of which 57.87 percent resulted positive for mastitis. Prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis in Pune district was 60.48 percent and Satara was 57.87 percent while clinical mastitis was 8.21 percent and 9.90 percent, respectively. All milk samples were processed for bacteriological culture test and 127 (54.04 percent) samples yielded culturally positive indicating 93.38 percent agreement with CMT results. On BHI plates, 203 bacterial isolates were obtained either as single or in combination of two or more phenotypic organisms. Upon selective plating and biochemical testing, majority were identified as Staphylococcus aureus (39.41 percent) followed by E. coli (26.11 percent) while remaining 70 (34.48 percent) isolates were other minor bacterias comprising 15.76 percent gram positive and 18.72 percent gram negative organisms. All isolates when subjected for in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity test indicated highest susceptibility to Gentamicin against 78.33 percent isolates followed by Enrofloxacin against 76.35 percent isolates, Ceftriaxone against 60.1 percent and Ciprofloxacin against 47.78 percent isolates, respectively. Rest of the organisms were either moderately sensitive or resistant to other antibiotics with highest number of organisms recorded resistance for commonly used antibiotics viz. Penicillin (94.58 percent followed by Oxytetracycline (79.4 percent), Streptomycin (65.02 percent) and Chloramphenicol (43.35 percent). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
