This article attempts to deal with the currently controversial issue of abortion. Personnel within Catholic social service agencies are caught in the dilemma of conflicting policies arising out of the teaching of the Catholic Church and position statements of NASW. It is the suggestion of the authors that the issue be addressed more directly and clearly by way of a policy statement within each agency. The policy presented in this article is intended to facilitate the process of developing that policy. The number of issues and the complexity of each is demonstrated further by considering the varied frameworks for discussion, whether political, theological, professional, or personal. But as the debate continues, individuals, groups, and agencies must make decisions regarding abortion and abortion services. These decisions are difficult to make due to the conflicting policies related to abortions. The American Roman Catholic Bishops have clearly identified themselves with the teaching of the Church. In addition to their involvement in preparation of the Second Vatican Council's documents, their antiabortion stance is evidenced in the establishment and work of the Committee for Pro-Life Activities of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. |
