I found a foreign-car mechanic, took it to his shop and discovered that he was a former Renault service manager. Rust in peace: celebrating the dying art of the scrapyard I enjoyed your piece about Paul White and his stunning pencil pictures inspired by car scrapyards (Motoring art, August), the more so because I share his interest in the sad but still-thrilling remains of once-loved cars. Reading supercar-filled issues of Car far more avidly than any home work, I "knew" that the Ferrari was the better car. The mechanic I talked to said the car was a piece of crap, and that the 1974 model had an air pump for emissions control that pumped air to right outside the exhaust port to burn off any excess unburnt fuel, and also burned exhaust valves.
