The phenomenon of the archways arose in response to the social and security factors of the Islamic city, as they are built on alleys, paths and streets. The development of the archways did not exclusively include planning and building materials, but rather a diversity of functions. The archway was not limited to connecting neighborhoods to streets, but also protecting the Ottoman rulers, as confirmed by such rooms including several levels of windows, some of which are open to the floor. In addition to the above, the archway fulfilled the function of protecting the rulers of the Ottoman Empire in Algeria. The rulers tended to establish the archways, connecting their palaces to the throne room, and there were also seats for the warden, having a security function. In addition to the architectural decoration, represented by arches, columns, crowns, pillars, arches and architectural projections, other elements found inside and outside the archway, such as the lighting and natural ventilation elements, with the emergence of skylights and openings in the walls, and water drainage gutters which are used to ward off damage from passers-by and eliminate the risk of flooding suffered by the archway.
