Abstrakt: The dual scientific research framework presented in this paper is an approach to generate scientific progress as well as real-world impact for practitioners and society. Between these two poles the framework demonstrates a possibility for researchers to do justice to both worlds. For researchers the framework can serve as a guide on how to effectively conduct joint research with companies by building on established methods and approaches. The dual scientific research will be presented in the context of IoT ecosystems. It focuses on the role of research in creating IoT ecosystems and exemplary scientific artifacts. The framework was derived from 20 IoT ecosystems which were initiated and accompanied within our research. We illustrate the framework with the IoT ecosystems industrial service and risk management.
