This article presents a study on the hyperkinetic syndrome of childhood. The hyperkinetic syndrome should not be indiscriminately diagnosed in a child who exhibits hyperactivity, solely on the basis of motor activities or disruptive behavior. This syndrome is a medical condition which is attributable to any number of prenatal or postnatal, mechanical or chemical insults. Many children exhibit a high degree of activity as a result ofa high level of curiosity and should not be considered hyperactive or hyperkinetic. A truly hyperactive child has other symptoms which include emotional ability, disorders of attention, distractibility, incoordination, impulsivity, low frustration tolerance, memory and thinking, and specific learning disabilities. |
