An icon of Virgin Gorgo epikoos with miracle scenes, painted in 1818 by an anonymous author and kept in the collection of Art Gallery "Dimitar Dobrovich" in Sliven is presented. The icon, which is a replica of the miracle-working icon of Virgin Gorgoepikoos of the Docheiariou monastery on Mont Athos, is surrounded by the images of the founders of the Docheiariou monastery, as well as by six scenes of the miracles, made by the icon of Virgin Gorgoepikoos itself, where the Virgin and the archangels Michael and Gabriel also are involved. It is supposed that these scenes are painted texts, inspired by an unpublished manuscript of the Docheiariou monastery. The examined icon is unique, as there are not known other examples of icons of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos which include a cycle with the miracles of the Docheiaritan icon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
