Abstrakt: Reviews the book, 'Buddhism and Human Flourishing: A Modern Western Perspective ' by Seth Zuihō Segall (2020). In Buddhism and Human Flourishing: A Modern Western Perspective, Seth Zuihō Segall, a Zen priest, chaplain, psychologist, and author (Segall, 2003, 2020), offers a more promising alternative: "eudaimonistic enlightenment," a judicious amalgam of two of the most viable visions of human excellence--Buddhist ideals of enlightenment and the Aristotelian notion of eudaimonia, "living or faring well" (Aristotle, 1980, p. 5), or flourishing. Segall's clear and thoughtful book will be of great interest to a wide variety of readers from laypeople who yearn for more sustaining ideals to seasoned scholars and spiritual practitioners who are open to questioning and deepening their quest to live a better life.
