The hook pulls that top thread loop around the bobbin thread to form a lock stitch. To form a stitch on a sewing machine or longarm, a part called a "hook" grabs a loop of top thread that forms behind the needle just as the needle begins to raise up out of the fabric. You can choose a smaller longarm needle for thinner quilting threads like the invisible thread or bobbin weight thread, so the needle hole is smaller, and the thread fills up the hole better.
