Abstrakt: The article examines the depiction of risk and maritime news in the 16th-century play "The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare. Topics discussed include the importance of the failure of the character Antonio to insure his ships to the action of the play, establishment of an analogic epistemology of risk between spectators and venturers in the play due to the network of news from the sea, and the meaning of the distributive sense of squander in the play.
