The IEEE P802.3cm-2020 standard published in March 2020 supports 100 m over OM4 and 150 m over OM5. In this paper, we recollect multiple 100G/400G experiments over OM4/5 fiber/cabling and recast the discussion in the purpose of studying the potential of modules based on 50G PAM4 per lane (such as 100G-BiDi and 400G-SR) supporting future extended reach over OM4/5 fiber/cabling, following the same path of 40G/100G SR4 Ethernet solutions. It is consistent with theoretical modelling showing extended reach up to 300 m by increasing equalizer taps and improving other parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
