Abstrakt: Antibiotic growth promoters have been used in animal husbandry to increase animal feed conversion rate, reduce inflammation and resist pathogenic bacteria for many years. However, the world has gradually realized since 2000 that the abuse of antibiotic growth promoters may lead to the emergence of highly drug-resistant super bacteria . It is inevitable that humans may face the dilemma of no medicine available in the near future. The application of antibiotic growth promoters has been banned by EU since 2006. With the prohibition of antibiotics, farmers must look for alternatives to balance the environment, animal production, and also the highly industrialized modern animal husbandry. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new, effective, cheap, safety and better promoting animal growth and health feed/feed additives. There are many substances that have positive effects on animal health in nature, including probiotics, plant polyphenols (essential oil) and Chinese herbs, etc. Among them, plant sources (phytochemicals) contain various natural functional secondary metabolites, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins and terpenes, etc., which have advantages on high antioxidant, immune regulations (anti-inflammatory activities) and are able to adjust intestinal microflora and other functions, which could help animals to conquer environmental stress and to maintain animal health.
