Abstrakt: Relevance is an essential construct in Alfred Schutz's phenomenologically based life-world theory. It places different time perspectives as fundamental parts of how we perceive the world and of what motivates us to specific courses of actions. This paper aims to understand the notions of relevance and time in Schutz's theoretical proposal by exploring its methodological implications to interpretative empirical social research. We conclude that not all approaches deriving from the interpretative paradigm have fully considered the consequences of these concepts as basis for developing empirical investigation methods, but that biographical approaches under narrative and reconstructive principles have better succeeded in systematically incorporating practical application of these Schutz's basic assumptions.
