The article reports that atherosclerotic vascular lesions are characterized by an accumulation of cholesterol and cholesterol esters in lesional tissue. Cellular accumulation of cholesterol esters in macrophages or smooth muscle cells may precede the development of the atherosclerotic vascular lesion. Also xanthomatous lesions are characterized by accumulation of cholesterol and cholesterol esters in tissues. In some of the recent studies researchers have studied the interaction of low density lipoproteins (LDL) or acetylated LDL (Ac-LDL) with cultured porcine or human monocytes. |
