This analysis investigated the users of a school-based, client-choice pantry, with attention toward significant differences in food selection based upon one's level of nutrition literacy, food insecurity, and food preferences. Before selecting items at the food pantry, 61 adult pantry users completed measures of nutrition literacy and indicated food preferences. Directly following, family food selections were recorded. This analysis found that the mean number of discretionary items selected by those with poor nutrition literacy was significantly higher than for those with higher literacy scores. However, the level of household food insecurity did not play a role in discretionary item selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
