Abstrakt: 24 Clinical Psychology Forum 340 - April 2021 Diagnosing autistic spectrum disorder in adult community mental health teams Megan Smith, Mark Banham, Nazik Nemat & Thomas Christodoulides This paper describes the process of incorporating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnostic assessments within local community mental health teams as a response to the long waiting times for diagnostic assessment from specialist services. Diagnostic outcomes Of the 28 service users referred, 24 received a diagnosis of ASD, three were found not to meet the threshold for diagnosis and one did not complete the assessment process. It has also highlighted areas for future research to greater understand this issue, including a need to gain service user feedback on the process and impact of diagnosis, and greater investigation into the role of gender on the experience of receiving an ASD diagnosis. This initiative has been successful in supporting service users to access earlier ASD diagnosis within existing community services, and has gone some way to reducing the unmet need in ASD within the local teams.
