Abstrakt: Whereas wartime newspaper headlines praised the Hello Girls as "Brave Girl Soldiers of the Switchboard", and they sometimes referred to themselves as soldiers in their letters and diaries, until 1977 they were officially categorized as civilian "contract employees" of the US Army. When the United States entered the war, 223 bilingual female telephone switchboard operators were trained and sent to France in 1918 to improve the performance of the US Army's telephone networks.
