Abstrakt: Given the prevalence that culture plays across the athletics context, the purpose of the study was to compare responses from participants (N=345) to discover any similarities (or differences) in the cultures established by coaches and athletics directors in intercollegiate athletics. The findings indicated that both similarities and differences existed among athletics department cultures and team subcultures. In particular, coaches of revenue generating sports teams perceived their team culture to be more congruent with the overall athletics department compared to coaches of non-revenue generating sports. Additionally, the length of athletics director tenure was positively associated with the congruency of the athletics department culture and team's subculture. This study has a practical application, as it will aid in the ongoing discussion of length of tenure among coaches and athletics directors, as well as address the current divide that is occurring between revenue and nonrevenue athletics programs.
