There are two major approaches for correcting SP 13 sp C values for the lipid content: chemical lipid extraction and lipid normalization using a mathematical approach (Clark et al., 2019; Logan et al., 2008). The developed lipid normalization model allows for the separate analysis of SP 13 sp C and SP 15 sp N and enable SP 13 sp C values to be compared across individual laminae, different individuals, and species with varying lipid content. After considering the potential impacts on the SP 15 sp N values associated with chemical lipid extraction a mathematical lipid-normalization approach was used to correct SP 13 sp C values of earwax. However, relatively high C:N ratio after lipid extraction could indicate the presence of other protein, nonpolar lipid, or unextractable biological compound that may drive C:N > 3.5 (Cloyed I et al i ., 2020).
