In this work we present the results of phylogenetic studies made on stream dwelling gudgeons (Gobio sp.) collected from eleven Southeast Carpathian watercourses. Despite the relatively limited geographic range of the studied area, the mtCR sequenations resulted altogether nine haplotypes. Which were classified into two valid species and a haplogroup with doubtful phylogenetic and taxonomic position. The Danubian gudgeon (G. obtusirostris) was indicated only from the direct Danubian inflows, from Nera/Néra/and Krassó/Caraș/rivers. Common gudgeon (G. gobio) was found in the River Argyas/Argeș/, which also flows into the Danube but originates on the outer, southern Carpathian slopes. The new, currenly doubtful haplogroup of „Gobio sp. 1" is occurring widely in the sampled area: Sebes-Körös/Crișul Repede/, Fehér-Körös/Crișul Alb/, Béga/Bega/, Temes/Timiș/, Berzava/Bârzava/, Sztrigy/Strei/, Kis-Küküllő/Târnava Mică/, and Olt rivers. This taxonomically doubtful group ("cryptic species") indicated only from the Middle Tisza drainage previously. Our present study revealed, that the G. gobio appears from the lower Danubian watershed as well. Therefore this area can't be excluded from its range. Additionally the „Gobio sp. 1", this slightly differentiated but phylogenetically distinct entity is the solely occurring Gobio taxa on the middle and lower Tisza basin. To clarify the taxonomic position of this group additional (e.g. morphological) investigations will be needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
