The article presents information on achieving optimal treatment outcome for patients with depression. Andrew F. Leuchter, M.D., said that the goal of treating depression should be complete symptom resolution, so as to reduce the risk of relapse, ease the management of concomitant medical and psychiatric illnesses, and improve quality of life. Along with discussing the efficacy of venlafaxine and duloxetine, Leuchter discussed tolerability and safety factors. Less frequent side effects for duloxetine include nausea, headache, paresthesia and insomnia. Side effects common with venlafaxine include nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, insomnia and somnolence. |
