The article presents information on differences between mental retardates and terminal trainees in workshop. In order to answer the question, "What are the differences between retardates who are considered to be terminal trainees in a workshop and retardates who have achieved competitive employment after a period of exposure in a workshop?," an attempt was made to identify certain factor's which would distinguish the two groups. For this purpose a Work Evaluation Report (WER) was developed. A Termination Report, filled out by the workshop staff and an intelligence test administered before entrance into the workshop, contributed other factors which were found to be useful in distinguishing between the comparison groups. These groups were compared, using ratings derived from the WER and the other factors previously mentioned. The Terminal Group was composed of 25 trainees in the Work Training Center while the 12 in the Employed Group had been in the workshop but at the time of the study were in competitive outside employment. On the WER 16 items were found to be significantly higher for the Employed Group. Time in the workshop and the non-verbal scales of the Wechsler test distinguished the Employed from the Terminal Group. Certain questions were raised by this study. One involved the training of that group for whom outside employment could be predicted. |
