The article focuses on the effect of instructions to fake masculinity on the femininity-masculinity (FM) scale of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank for Women (SVIBW). The FM scale of the Strong VIB purports to measure the dominant direction of interests of an individual as it conforms to or diverges from the typical picture of his or her sex group. Its presumed validity is therefore less face, than empirical, validity. It should on this account be less subject to the faking effect than scales lacking its empirical foundations. The SVIBW was given twice to 40 women religious in order to determine the effect of faking masculinity on the FM scale. The mean of the FM standard score was lowered very significantly. Of 25 occupational scale scores, 15 were changed significantly on the second taking of the test. Scores on 7 of the scales were increased and 8 were decreased. The Lawyer scale showed the greatest increase, the Elementary Teacher scale the greatest decrease under faking instructions. Other teacher scales were affected, but not so markedly. The Occupational Therapist and Nurse scales also showed a notable decrease under faking instructions. |
