The article seeks to discuss language policies and the production of social identities in immigration contexts in Brazil, where the dominant language is Portuguese. We start with a notion of language as social and local practice and of multilingualism as a set of ideologically charged communicative resources, in accordance with Monica Heller, Jan Blommaert and Alastair Pennycook. The data are the result of three ethnographic surveys carried out in immigration zones in the South of Brazil. The results show that the uses of languages have distinctive values in the symbolic markets in which people participate and are stratified locally, translocally and globally in the contexts of Slavic and Germanic immigration in the South of Brazil. The co-generated multilingual language policies are enmeshed with local and translocal values and identities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
