Abstrakt: This article studies channels of interpersonal and mass communication in an organizational setting. Each form of change--the recurring and the unique--is integrated into the organizational structure through established patterns of interaction and communication. Because of their scope, policy-making implications, and potential for rumor-transmission, the unique changes and decisions appear especially vital to the redirection and integration of the organization. This article is concerned with the diffusion of information about a unique and major change in a large and complex organization. Particular emphasis is given to the initial differential receipt of this information by persons occupying positions at different levels in the organization and working in different types of units. Despite the rigid control of informational sources, awareness of the existence of this specially created administrative elite and the impending changes began to develop as key personnel in the organizational realignments were called before the administrative elite for consultations.
