When Bell and Creed worked together with Johnny Mathis, they invited him to their Philadelphia office to have a chat - Mathis was astonished and thrilled when the first song they presented him with was the highly personalised I'm Coming Home, as no one had ever thought to ask him about his life before. Originally, Bell was a singer, in a duo with his sister's high school friend Kenny Gamble, who used to turn up at their house to get homework tips. When Creed broke one of their golden songwriting rules by mentioning religion ("God bless you") in You Make Me Feel Brand New, Bell tore a strip off her. In 1962, Some Day You'll Be My Love was released by Kenny & Tommy on Jerry Ross' Heritage label, by which time Bell was a lithography student; a year later the duo expanded to a five-piece, Kenny Gamble & The Romeos, and started to pick up session work at Philadelphia's hot new Cameo and Parkway labels, where Bell was initially employed as a backing vocalist and pianist.
