Abstrakt: Geriatrics is the most vulnerable stage of life, i.e., susceptible for medical and psycho social issues. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in due course of treatment to alleviate the suffering are common which can pose risk, complications and results in debilitation. The present study emphasises about the incidence and pattern of adverse drugs reactions (ADRs) in elderly population. A prospective study was carried out for a period of four years in geriatric patients (2 65 years). The suspected adverse drug reactions were identified and the information was collected from patients admitted to various departments of tertiary care hospital and old age home in a prestructured case record form. A total of 526 geriatric patients were enrolled during the study period. Forty three suspectedADRs have been identified of31 different in nature among 37 individuals. The incidence of ADRs was 7.48 for male, 6.47 female, and 7.03 for either gender of geriatric patients. Majority of ADRs were of augmentative (Type A) 72.09 %, single diagnosed 83.78% and hospitalised individuals 86.48%. Apart from this, other facts like antimicrobials induced ADRs 21%, hypoglycaemia ADRs, and ADRs of gastrointestinal disorders 23.36% were more. Incidence of ADRs was high in male counterpart which may be attributed due to gender bias. Augmentative, hospitalised, gastrointestinal disorders, hypoglycaemia and antimicrobials induced were the commonest ADRs. Judicious and cautious usage of drugs may lessen the burden of ADRs and othermedication related issues among geriatrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
