Adolescent substance use; a major challenge facing the world today, has proliferated into a global health problem of epidemic proportions. Sadly, such global problems often strike hardest the most vulnerable segments of society, adolescents. The study sought to explore the aetiology and patterns of adolescent substance use focusing on the psycho-ecological factors that precipitate substance use among high school students. An analytic cross-sectional survey design was used as the strategy of inquiry. The sample consisted of 372 adolescents in Forms 1 to 6 selected using a two-stage stratified random sampling procedure. Data was collected using questionnaires from 5 research sites. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests of association and multiple regression analysis. Results indicate that the use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and inhalants is prevalent and there is an association between gender and substance use. Parental substance use, parental child rearing, school climate, peer substance use, sensation seeking and negative affectivity also emerged as significant predictors of adolescent substance use. Findings suggest the need for multilevel interventions that target not only adolescent substance users but also other ecological settings such as the family and the school systems.
