The article examines the relationship between competitions, awards and gambling in Islam. The jurists view competitions which do not involve awards as permissible. However, they differ in their opinions on competitions where awards are involved. When competitions involve awards, then primary question in the evaluation of its ruling is to know whether there is an element of gambling or not. The concept of award sponsoring in competitions is more characterized as charity and contributions, which is encouraged and which are beneficial. On this basis, the sponsoring of an award from the head of the state or those who are not involved in the competition is allowed. |
