Abstrakt:	This review provides the first systematic report of the literature on impairments to GABAergic transmission in the basolateral nucleus of the amygdaloid complex of the brain, leading to increases in anxiety levels. Increases in anxiety are regarded as the main factor prompting alcohol cravings and producing the manifestations of alcohol dependence. Structural-functional rearrangements of ionotropic and metabotropic GABA receptors in acute and chronic exposure to ethanol and withdrawal syndrome are discussed. Data in the role of GABA transporters in the pathogenesis of alcoholism are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
