Abstrakt: The article focuses on Catholic marriage practices in the Dutch Golden Age. It highlights the conflict between the Canon and the secular marriage laws of the Dutch Republic and strategies adopted by Dutch Catholics to deal with the requirements of Church and state. It discusses the impact of theological, political and social transformations introduced by the Protestant and Catholic Reformation on marriage practices.
