The authors summarized data that establish the importance of epithelial host defense against invading respiratory bacterial pathogens and discuss how these pathogens outsmart these immune mechanisms to successfully establish infection. Diverse bacterial pathogens have also evolved many means to manipulate host cell death to increase pathogen survival and spread. [Extracted from the article]
