Students of Islamic Studies need to master the Islamic primary sources as the entire primary source of Islamic studies are mostly in the Arabic language. This can be realized through the formation of proper teaching and learning of Islamic studies. Narrow Reading (NR) is one of the approaches in Extensive Reading aimed at improving reading efficiency by topic or field. This study evaluates the impact of NR techniques to improve reading comprehension of Islamic texts by students of Islamic studies. A total of 47 students from the faculty of Islamic studies were selected as samples for this study. Pre-test and post-test are conducted before and after 2 weeks of NR applied in Extensive Reading activities. Paired t-test analysis is used for test results. The findings show a significant difference in the understanding of Islamic texts after the implementation of NR. Magnitude of the intervention’s effect (eta squared) were huge. The findings are reinforced by usage of linguistic analysis of the Islamic jurisprudence text. The results of the analysis shows the relationship between lexical and semantic. The use of NR techniques is established to assist Islamic studies reduce the burden of understanding Islamic text reading. The study provides important implications and recommends further studies as a validity of the effectiveness of NR techniques for Islamic studies’ students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
