The present contribution deals with social care, philanthropy and general care offered by early Christians and its fundamental organisation. This period was marked by various epidemic plagues (the plague of Antonine, the plague of Cyprian) which occurred in the Roman Empire in the period of 165-180 and 251-266. This showed the resiliance of the nascent Christian social culture. The examples show, how the Christians helped individuals and groups in the unfortunate circumstances which affected them. The prime example is the Vasiliad, which was the centre for assistance towards the ill, widows, elderly, those suffering from other diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
