Abstrakt:	A levirate marriage in the Old Testament dealt with the existence of a widow and her descendants with a close relative. It was an option, not an obligation. The Old Testament phenomenon of polygamy is a characteristic feature of the nations in the Middle East and it is a reason why nowadays we need to understand and interpret this fact correctly in the Holy Scripture.
