Academic engagement is behavioral and includes attending class, participating in discussions (in class or online), extra credit assignments, or contacting the instructor about course content or requirements. For MOOCs, course completion has often been used as the measure of performance, but due to the nature of this mode of instruction, that measure seems simplistic in the context of the complex nature of MOOCs and the likely variance in student experiences and interactions with the course and course materials. The Moderating Effect of Courses Related to a Student's Academic Major Students pursuing courses related to their chosen academic major likely exhibit higher levels of engagement and internal locus of control related directly to those courses.
